Meet Sofia Lynggaard Normann

It is clear that your family has a very strong design and aesthetic DNA, passed on from one generation to the next. Can you talk a bit about what that means to you, what it was like growing up within it.
Both my grandmother and mother have a very strong aesthetic sense, both in style and interior design. I have been influenced by them from a very early age, and in many ways, I see details and think a lot like they do. It's nice to be inspired by each other – and across several generations.

You have just launched your first collection for your family company, as the 3rd generation. Can you tell us a bit about the process behind that. How were you trained, how did you prepare and how did you eventually decide that artistically you were ready to step in your grandfather’s and mother’s footsteps?
I have always loved drawing. It’s a way for me to express my thoughts and ideas. My grandfather and I both have a quite playful, almost humorous, drawing style. I have always admired both my mother's and grandfather's work and the way they work, taking the time it takes to make a good design, perfecting the details, and creating an entire creative universe. It took some time for me to find my path, but ultimately my passion for creativity and craftsmanship just naturally went into jewellery design. I feel very grateful that I get to share the passion for design with my grandfather and my mother. It means a lot to me, and I learn a lot from them. Being three generations under one roof is very special.

Being a creative mind, what does fashion mean to you as a jewellery designer and personally?
The story associated with the design is something I really appreciate. It makes it personal. I also think it is important to have a fun and playful approach and not rush a process, it must take the time it takes for it to feel right. Taking time and being patient have taught me how much better things end up and how much more I involve myself in it.

Can you give us a great tip for styling high end jewellery?
I love to wear t-shirts or shirts as well as work clothes with my jewellery in everyday life. I wear my Young Fish ring on my little finger almost every day, but I style and change the rest of my jewellery from day to day. I have a quite playful approach and love to wear my jewellery in different combinations.

We have experienced your generational influence, that we talked about earlier, first hand. We often discover that your grandmother, your mother and yourself will all pick independently of each other the same pieces from our collection. Can you elaborate a bit on how you think all manage to look relevant to your age, wearing the same pieces?
It’s fun to see how we fall in love with and comment on the same things. It happens very randomly and naturally. It binds us together. We share the same taste in many things. We like many of the same brands, and go to the regular places we love, which is why we might end up with the same shirt selection from you. The style we have work across all generations. I feel like my taste has always been the same and the same goes for my mom and grandmother – I have probably been influenced by them.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs, creatively or otherwise?
Nature is a great inspiration to me. I am especially drawn to the ocean and its movements, which is also the main inspiration for my collections. When diving in Australia, a whole new universe opened up for me underwater. Fish, seaweed, corals, waves, currents, and structures in the sand. It’s a world where light brings colours to life. A world that is always in motion.
